Founded in 1986, the OAKLAND INTERFAITH GOSPEL CHOIR consists of 55 singers and four musicians, who represent a multi-racial, multi-cultural, interfaith community of diversity.
The mission of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir is: 1) to employ Black gospel music to express the power of spirit and bring a message of faith, hope, love, and joy to the country and to the world; 2) to exemplify through interfaith, multi-racial and multi-cultural membership the principles of equality, justice, peace, unity and cooperation; and 3) to serve as a model for what is possible among all people.
The sheer joy and exuberance of spirit kindled by this music in singers and audiences alike delivers a powerful message and proves that people of diverse backgrounds can indeed come together and create unity and hope for the future. And have a good time doing it!
OIGC’s exquisite vocal harmonies and stirring gospel repertoire have led to performances with music industry greats such as Tramaine Hawkins, Take 6, The Clark Sisters, Walter Hawkins, Linda Ronstadt, Stan Getz, Jeffrey Osborne and Peter Gabriel.
OIGC has toured Canada, Australia and Israel, and has been featured at the New Orleans, Monterey, Russian River, and San Francisco Jazz Festivals. Last spring, OIGC was picked to perform at the First Annual Choral Festival in Charleston, SC.
The Choir currently has three albums available: We’ve Come a Mighty Long Way; Rejoice; and Great Day – A Capella Negro Spirituals, and was named “Best Gospel Choir” by the East Bay Express in 2006 and was just voted winner in the “Best Church Music” category by East Bay Express‘ 2009 Reader’s Poll.
