Band Spotlight #20: Dizzy Balloon

July 30, 2009

Dizzy Balloon is five childhood friends bound by a passion for songwriting. The band’s vision-quest to write the perfect pop song – one that makes you drop everything and go “whoa” – brought the group attention and distinction at a young age. As high school juniors, then performing under the name “Panda”, the band regularly sold out Bottom of the Hill, a legendary breeding ground for San Francisco Bay Area talent. They brought a new energy to classic pop, a vibe audiences still can’t get enough of.

Now college-aged and armed with a new album of smart, buzzing pop, the five-piece is ready to pull you into their quest. You will turn. You will listen. These guys always make their live show as memorable and exciting as possible.

Band Spotlight #19: Dresden and Johnston

July 24, 2009

It’s official! The production team of Dave Dresden and Mikael Johnston have become dance music’s next remix gurus and THE ‘go to’ producers for all things EDM. And the East Bay Express is bringing this duo together, for the first time ever live on stage, at the Best of the East Bay Party. Dave Dresden and Mikael Johnston are no strangers to success. Both are electronic music pioneers.  Both have risen above the mundane world of mediocrity to establish musical legacies in their own right.

Already citing two Billboard Hot Club Party chart toppers with Lily Allen’s“The Fear”, and Nadia Ali’s “Love Story”, the elite production duo Dresden and Johnston is carving a very rugged and well earned niche into the ever evolving EDM market.

Both Dave and Mykael have made very successful careers within the EDM scene, Dave with Gabriel and Dresden and Mikael with Warner Brothers act Mephisto Odyssey.

With reputations for writing compelling and very danceable music that touches people the world over, this team is simply on the brink of super stardom. Both Dave and Mikael have a sixth sense on what works on a dancefloor.

You won’t find filler music from Dresden and Johnston. That is just a fact. While many remixers take a day to chop up and regurgitate a track, Dresden and Johnston often rewrite the entire song to give it the sound and feeling that they are proud to put their name to. People expect a tight production along with melodies and a signature hook, something Dresden and Johnston have truly mastered.

As producers and remixers, they have worked individually and collectively with some of music industries elite; The Killers, Janes Addiction, and Lily Allen to name but a few.

Band Spotlights #15-#16: BandWorks Bands!

July 15, 2009

Kids rock. And these kids rock the hardest.

Chabot Space & Science Center‘s Kid Zone features rock bands Rikoche and The Sasha Lopez Band, both courtesy of BandWorks School of Rock. (By the way, the school happens to be across the street from the new Express digs, which we’re stoked about.)

Rikoche is an up and coming teen band out of the East Bay, members hail from Berkeley, Orinda, Piedmont and Oakland. The band was conceived and continues to rehearse with the East Bay BandWorks program. In fact they have become one of BandWorks top representative groups and the latest stars of the program.

Despite only playing together for a few years, their talent and taste have helped them put a new and flavorful spin on classic rock. Their original sound and exciting stage presence has helped them develop a devoted following and led to more offers to play live.

Rikoche has already played at a handful of Bay Area venues and events including the Solano Stroll, the East Bay Express Best of the Bay Party, San Ramon’s Art and Wind Festival, Chabot Space & Science Center, Larkspur Landing, Rooster’s Roadhouse in Alameda and most recently at San Franciscos DNA Lounge in their Battle of the Bands contest. While they continue to write new music they recorded there first studio demo this summer and are planning a CD debut party this Fall.

Band Spotlight #14: Fracas

July 15, 2009

FRACAS - Lille, La Chimère, le 5 avril 2009Fracas has been playing in the Oakland Bay Area for over ten years. Their sound is rooted in the hardcore punk of the early 1980’s (Fear, Cro-Mags, Misfits) with nods toward slightly more modern groups like the Jesus Lizard. They’ve done several US and European tours, put out 4 CDs, 3 – 7 inch singles, and appeared on a number of compilations. Their shows are often laced with danger and violence. All of the band members have broken bones, some have repeatedly broken the same ones.

Band members: Joe Franke – Vocals, Dan Tollbooth – Guitar, Jesse Rosales – Guitar, Ian Carpenter – Bass Guitar, Markley Hart – Drums

Amoeba Music DJ Stage Line Up Announced!

July 15, 2009

History is being made at the Best of the East Bay Party ladies and gents. Never before has the entire Oakland Faders crew performed together under one roof.

This phenomenal, vinyl-based DJ collective has, both as a group and individually, won countless awards from the East Bay Express and other media. They have toured the nation and the world since getting their start in Oakland in the mid-1990’s.

They take record collecting very seriously and always prefer rockin’ doubles of the newest/hottest instrumental. Over the years, their skills have become top notch, and their cuts have become way funkier. Their expansive vinyl collection is a full-fledged music library and a tribute to a world before the digital age took over.

Band Spotlight #13: The Dynamic Faye Carol

July 13, 2009

headshotFaye Carol is one of the premiere vocalists of her time. Her unique style and gift of connecting with her audience is astonishing.  Arranging jazz standards and other popular songs in her own way, is nothing new to Miss Carol. She began this decades ago, well before mixing genres such as hip-hop & jazz were so widely embraced.

This Bay Area living legend remains true to her Mississippi roots infusing the blues into everything from Cole Porter to Michelle Legrand songs. She began singing while still a young girl in Meridian where here grandmother recognized her gift & kept her involved in school & church events. After relocating to Pittsburg, CA she became immersed in gospel music, touring nationally with her church group. In the 1960s her professional career began, and she was a large part of the innovative funk scene in Oakland, CA.

The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol & Her Trio was formed in the 1970s. Heavily influenced by contemporaries Betty Carter & Aretha Franklin, Miss Carol began to cultivate an audience that remains diverse as her uplifting music.  She’s also maintained a high level of musicianship in her group, grooming young aspiring musicians like pianists Benny Green and her daughter, Kito Gamble.

Miss Carol continues to lead her group, as well as collaborate with other artists.  Some of the people she has shared the stage with include  Charles Brown, David Murray, Gene Ammons, Ray Charles, Billy Higgins, Steve Turre, Albert King, Bobby Hutcherson, Pharaoh Sanders, Philly Jo Jones, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson, Tootie Heath and Ben Vereen.  Now, she can be heard with The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Howard Wiley & The Angola Project, Sista Kee & IOP, and Mal Sharpe’s Big Money in Jazz Band.

Faye Carol & Her Quartet celebrate the new release FAYE SINGS LADY DAY. This tribute to Billie Holiday was recorded Live at Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA.  It is evident that the Holiday material is dear to Carol’s heart and the chemistry she has with her band and her audience is extraordinary.  Past Faye Carol recordings include The Flow 1996, The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol 1991, Alive at The Great American Music Hall 1989, Classic Caroling 1985.

Some of the venues Miss Carol has appeared at include Montreal Jazz Fest, Monterey Blues Fest, DePaul University, Town Hall, UCLA Jazz Fest, Lorraine Hansberry Theater, Yerba Buena, Napa Valley Opera House, Bay view Opera House, Denver Museum of Natural History.  Tours include Germany, Midwest w/ Johnny Talbot, Marvin Gaye’s West Coast Tour.

wallshotMiss Carol also gives back to the musical community by teaching voice & the History of Black Music.  Her teaching career began in 1988 & continues to the present with the after-school program she founded at the Black Repertory Group, called MUSIC IN THE COMMUNITY.
